What is the National Senior Certificate (NSC)?

The National Senior Certificate (NSC) is South Africa's school-leaving qualification, registered on the National Qualifications Framework at Level 4 and quality-assured by Umalusi. The IEB, SACAI and the DBE all award the same nationally-registered NSC — the qualification is identical regardless of which assessment body administers the exams.

"Matric" and "the NSC" are used interchangeably by most parents, but understanding the qualification precisely matters — particularly when you need to know whether an online school's matric is the same as anyone else's. This guide defines it clearly.

What is the National Senior Certificate?

The NSC is the qualification awarded to a learner who successfully completes Grade 12 in South Africa. It is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at Level 4 — the level that gates access to higher education — and is quality-assured by Umalusi, the statutory body responsible for the quality of school-leaving qualifications in South Africa.

What makes the NSC different from many other countries' school-leaving certificates is that it is a single nationally-registered qualification, regardless of which assessment body administers the exams. There are three assessment bodies:

  • The Department of Basic Education (DBE) — administers the NSC exams for the majority of South African learners (public schools).

  • The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) — administers the NSC exams for most independent (private) schools.

  • The South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) — administers the NSC exams for a growing number of independent and online schools.

All three lead to the same NSC qualification, registered on the same NQF level and quality-assured by Umalusi. So a learner who writes through SACAI, IEB or DBE earns the same nationally-recognised qualification — the route differs, the destination does not. Read about Teneo's accreditation and results. Speak to the Teneo team.

What is the difference between the NSC and matric?

There is no difference — "matric" is the common name for the NSC. The two terms are used interchangeably, and both refer to the same Grade 12 qualification.

Historically, "matric" or "matriculation" referred to the old school-leaving qualification before the current NSC was introduced. The name stuck even after the qualification changed. So when a parent says "my child is doing matric," they mean the NSC, and when an official document says "National Senior Certificate," it means what everyone calls matric. The qualification, the registration, and the legal standing are the same either way.

Is the NSC recognised for university?

Yes — the NSC is the standard entry qualification for South African universities. A learner who achieves a Bachelor's pass (the highest endorsement level) on their NSC is eligible to apply for a bachelor's degree programme. A Diploma pass qualifies for diploma programmes, and a Higher Certificate pass for certificate programmes.

The Bachelor's pass requirements are specific: at least 40% in the Home Language, at least 50% in four 20-credit NSC subjects (excluding Life Orientation), and at least 30% in two other subjects, passing at least six of seven subjects. Meeting these earns the bachelor's degree endorsement on the NSC — which is the matric exemption — allowing the learner to apply to any university bachelor's programme, subject to that programme's own APS and subject requirements.

It is worth stating plainly: a Bachelor's pass does not guarantee university admission. It qualifies you to apply; admission depends on the university's own requirements, including the APS, specific subject grades, and (for some programmes) the NBT.

Who issues the National Senior Certificate?

Umalusi — not the DBE, IEB or SACAI individually. The assessment bodies (DBE, IEB, SACAI) administer the exams and submit the results; Umalusi quality-assures the process and authorises the release of results and the issuing of certificates. That is what gives the NSC its national standing: it is not a school's certificate or an assessment body's certificate, but a nationally registered qualification quality-assured by the statutory body.

For a parent at an online school, this is the reassurance that matters: whether your child writes through SACAI, IEB or DBE, the certificate they receive is the same nationally-registered NSC, quality-assured by Umalusi, registered on NQF Level 4, and recognised by every South African university. The assessment body is the route; Umalusi is the guarantor; the NSC is the qualification. See Teneo's accreditation and how online school works.

Frequently asked questions

What is the National Senior Certificate? South Africa's school-leaving qualification, awarded to learners who complete Grade 12. It is registered on the National Qualifications Framework at Level 4 and quality-assured by Umalusi. The IEB, SACAI and DBE all award the same nationally-registered NSC — the qualification is identical regardless of which assessment body administers the exams.

Is the NSC the same as matric? Yes — "matric" is the common name for the NSC. Both terms refer to the same Grade 12 qualification, registered on the same NQF level with the same legal standing.

Do IEB and SACAI award the same qualification as the DBE? Yes. All three are assessment bodies that administer the NSC exams under Umalusi's quality assurance. The qualification awarded — the National Senior Certificate — is the same nationally-registered NQF Level 4 qualification regardless of which body administers the exam. The route differs; the destination does not.

Is the NSC recognised for university? Yes — it is the standard entry qualification for South African universities. A learner who achieves a Bachelor's pass is eligible to apply for bachelor's degree programmes; a Diploma pass for diplomas; a Higher Certificate pass for certificates. Admission itself depends on the university's APS, subject requirements and (for some programmes) the NBT.

Who actually issues the NSC certificate? Umalusi authorises the issuing of NSC certificates after quality-assuring the examination process. The assessment bodies (DBE, IEB, SACAI) administer the exams and submit results; Umalusi is the statutory body that guarantees the qualification's national standing.

Does it matter which assessment body my child writes through? For the qualification itself, no — the NSC is the same regardless. In practice, the exam papers, assessment style and level of difficulty can differ between DBE, IEB and SACAI, and some families choose based on the assessment approach that suits their child. But the resulting NSC carries the same national registration and recognition.

The National Senior Certificate is South Africa's school-leaving qualification — registered on NQF Level 4, quality-assured by Umalusi, and awarded identically whether a learner writes through the IEB, SACAI or DBE. To learn more, see Teneo's accreditation, results, or speak to the Teneo team.
