2027 enrolments open

You can do matric online through a school registered with one of South Africa’s Umalusi-accredited exam boards — the IEB or SACAI. You study online and write the final National Senior Certificate examinations in person at a registered centre. This is not a fringe route: 94% of SACAI’s 6,168 candidates in 2025 were registered through distance-education providers or online schools. The certificate is identical and universities treat it the same way. What varies is the provider, the exam board and how much teaching your child actually needs.
You can do matric online through an online school registered with one of South Africa's Umalusi-accredited exam boards — the IEB or SACAI. You study online and write the final National Senior Certificate examinations in person at a registered centre. At Teneo, Grade 12 costs R1,250 to R6,800 a month in 2027.
Thousands of South African learners finish matric online every year — 94% of SACAI's 6,168 candidates in 2025 were registered through distance-education providers or online schools — and they receive exactly the same National Senior Certificate as learners at any other school. The question is where — which kind of provider, which exam board, and how much teaching your child needs. Here are the routes, what to check before you enrol, and what Grade 12 online looks like at Teneo.
1. An online school registered with the IEB or SACAI The most common route for school-age learners. The school teaches, assesses and registers your child for the National Senior Certificate examinations.
2. A distance-education provider Similar to an online school, but usually with less live teaching and more independent study. Most are registered with SACAI.
3. Homeschooling with a registered provider A parent guides the learning, using a provider's content. For matric, School-Based Assessment still has to be completed through a registered route, so this needs careful planning.
4. Rewriting or completing subjects Learners who've already written matric can improve results through the May/June examination, including through the Department of Basic Education's free Second Chance Matric Programme.
For a full answer to whether an online matric counts, see can you do matric online?
1. Which exam board? The IEB or SACAI — ask for the school's registration number and confirm it with the exam board.
2. Where are final examinations written? In person, at a registered examination centre. A school that offers online final examinations isn't offering an NSC.
3. Who teaches? Live lessons, recorded lessons with teacher support, or content only?
4. Who marks School-Based Assessment? It counts towards the final mark, so it must be set and marked properly.
5. What does the full year cost? Tuition, registration, exam board fees and materials.
6. What are the results? Ask for the official pass rate and bachelor pass rate, with the number of learners who wrote — not just highlights.
Teneo is registered with both the IEB (11489) and SACAI (99304). Grade 12 learners choose an exam board, then a learning option.

Mix of Live and Recorded Classes: R5,300 a month
100% Recorded Classes: R4,300 a month — every lesson recorded to watch on a schedule, still taught by qualified teachers
Without Classes: R2,083.33 a month — homeschooling, with timetabled assessments marked by qualified teachers
Without Classes and Reports: R1,562.50 a month — current-year content on a schedule, with no assessments
Mix of Live and Recorded Classes: R4,400 a month
100% Recorded Classes: R3,000 a month
Without Classes: R1,666.67 a month
Without Classes and Reports: R1,250 a month
100% Live Classes is offered on the IEB only. See online Grade 12 and the full 2027 fees.
For most Grade 12 learners, an option with teaching and teacher-marked assessment is the safer choice. School-Based Assessment counts towards the final National Senior Certificate result, and Grade 12 is the year it matters most.
100% Live Classes — for learners who want a full live timetable through matric
Mix of Live and Recorded Classes — live teaching with some flexibility
100% Recorded Classes — for self-motivated learners who still want a teacher for every lesson, direct messaging and marked work
Without Classes — for homeschooling families who want Teneo's teachers to set and mark assessments
Without Classes and Reports — content only, with no assessments; for learners whose assessment is handled elsewhere
Both lead to the same National Senior Certificate, accepted equally by South African universities. At Teneo, they differ in three ways:
Fees: SACAI tuition is lower in every option it's offered — R4,400 against R5,300 a month for Mix of Live and Recorded Classes in Grade 12
Options: only the IEB offers 100% Live Classes in Grades 10 to 12
Language: the IEB route is English-only from Grade 10; SACAI is available in English or Afrikaans
Choose on how your child learns best, then on budget. The certificate is the same either way.

Live lessons on a timetable in the subjects where your child needs real-time teaching
Recorded lessons on a schedule in others, watched at a set time each week
Timetabled assessments set, invigilated, marked and moderated by qualified teachers — the School-Based Assessment that counts towards matric
Direct messaging with teachers, and after-school group tutorials
Past-paper practice, increasing through the year towards preliminary and final examinations
The structure matters most in matric. A clear weekly rhythm is what carries learners through the final examinations.
Registration: once-off — R1,850 for the class options, R750 for Without Classes, R500 for Without Classes and Reports
Exam board fees: in Grade 12, and on SACAI from Grade 10. The IEB's Grade 12 examination fee was R16,000 in 2026
Textbooks, a computer, internet and backup power
Example — Grade 12, IEB, 100% Recorded Classes: R51,600 in tuition, R1,850 registration and the IEB examination fee — about R69,450 at the 2026 exam-fee rate, before materials.
Grade 12 enrolment closes earlier than other grades, on the exam boards' cut-off dates — so don't leave a matric move until late in the year.
Grade 12 exam board fees must be paid by 31 March under Teneo's fee policy, or the learner can't be registered for that year's examinations.
University applications open from around April of the matric year and are decided on final Grade 11 results — so a strong Grade 11 matters as much as Grade 12.
Moving to an online matric from another school
The cleanest point is the start of Grade 10, when School-Based Assessment for the National Senior Certificate begins and learners choose their final subjects.
Moving in Grade 11 or 12 is possible, but needs planning: your child's School-Based Assessment record has to carry across, and the subjects and exam board need to match. Talk to admissions before you commit.
In Teneo's official 2025 SACAI results, 565 of 698 candidates passed — 80.9%, about eight points above SACAI's overall 73.16% — and 44.4% achieved a bachelor pass. Two Teneo learners achieved the highest marks in South Africa in Accounting and in Afrikaans Home Language, and eight IEB learners ranked in the top 1% nationally in their subjects.
