2027 enrolments open

Grade 8 can be done fully online through an accredited school, and the timing works in a learner’s favour. It is the first year of high school for everyone, so friendships, routines and subjects are new for the whole class. It sits two years before the subject choice that shapes matric. And it avoids the placement wait entirely — independent and online schools admit learners directly, with no feeder zones and no phased offers. In Gauteng alone the 2027 process drew 781,476 applications for just over 346,000 learners.
Grade 8 can be done fully online through an accredited school. At Teneo in 2027, Grade 8 learners choose from five learning options — from 100% Live Classes at R5,500 a month to homeschooling from R1,050 — in English or Afrikaans, following CAPS, with no placement process to wait for.
Grade 8 is the start of high school for every learner, which makes it one of the easiest points to move to online school: nobody is catching up with an established class. For many families in 2027 it's also a practical answer to a placement offer that hasn't come. Here's what Grade 8 online involves, what it costs and how to start.
Everyone starts fresh. Grade 8 is the first year of high school for every learner, so friendships, routines and subjects are new for all of them.
It's two years before the subject choice that shapes matric. At the end of Grade 9, learners choose between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy, and pick their electives. Grade 8 is the year to build the foundations for that decision.
It avoids the placement wait. Independent and online schools admit learners directly — enrolment doesn't depend on a provincial school placement, feeder zones or a school's capacity.
Demand for public Grade 8 places is intense. In Gauteng, the 2027 admissions process drew 781,476 applications for more than 346,000 learners, with offers released in phases from 15 October 2026.
If your child is waiting for an offer, keep checking the admissions system and accept any offer within the deadline. An online school place doesn't close that door — but it means your child has a confirmed school for January either way.

Grade 8 is part of the CAPS Senior Phase (Grades 7 to 9). Learners take:
Home Language
First Additional Language
Mathematics
Natural Sciences
Social Sciences — History and Geography
Technology
Economic and Management Sciences
Life Orientation
Creative Arts
It's a broad year by design. These subjects let learners discover where their strengths lie before narrowing down for Grade 10 — so it's worth paying attention to which subjects your child enjoys and does well in.
More subjects, more independence. Learners manage more subjects, more homework and more assessment deadlines.
Mathematics gets harder fast. Algebra builds through Grades 8 and 9, and a learner's Grade 9 Mathematics decides whether they take Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy in Grade 10.
Study habits start to matter. Grade 8 is the year to build routines — planning work, revising regularly, asking for help early. Learners who build them now find Grades 10 to 12 far more manageable.
At Teneo, the class options include gap detection and personalised academic support, so learners who start to slip in a subject are picked up early.
100% Live Classes — for learners who need the structure of a full live timetable, and the closest experience to a traditional high school day.
Mix of Live and Recorded Classes — for learners who want live teaching but some flexibility in the week.
100% Recorded Classes — for self-motivated learners with busy schedules, such as young athletes, who still want a teacher for every lesson.
Without Classes — for families where a parent can guide the day, but wants teachers to mark the work.
Without Classes and Reports — for families who'll manage teaching and assessment themselves, at the lowest cost.
Unsure? Most families moving from a traditional school start with more support and adjust later. Learning options can be changed in the first term of the school year.
An illustration for 100% Live Classes — timetables are shared on enrolment.
Live, timetabled lessons through the school day, across all nine subjects
Homework and practice in the afternoons, using the content modules for each lesson
Timetabled assessments set and marked by qualified teachers through the term
Direct messaging with teachers when a learner is stuck
After-school group tutorials in subjects where they need extra help
On Mix of Live and Recorded Classes or 100% Recorded Classes, some or all lessons are recorded and watched on a schedule, with the same teacher support.
Grade 8 is a social year, and online school shouldn't mean a lonely one. Teneo offers more than 40 extramurals, and the class options bring learners together in live lessons and group tutorials.
Outside school, keep up sport, clubs and friendships — they matter as much as the timetable. Many online learners find they have more time for them, without a daily commute.
Planning ahead: the end of Grade 9
The most important decision of high school comes at the end of Grade 9: Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, plus three electives.
Mathematical Literacy closes engineering, medicine, actuarial science, most BSc degrees and the chartered accountant route. A strong Grade 8 and 9 in Mathematics keeps every option open.
