2027 enrolments open

Online Grade 1 at Teneo is taught entirely through 100% Live Classes — real-time, timetabled lessons with qualified teachers, following CAPS, in English. There is no recorded-only or homeschooling option in the Foundation Phase, and that is deliberate. Young learners need a teacher’s voice, encouragement and real-time correction to learn to read and count. Gaps in Grade 1 are the hardest to close later. What online Grade 1 does not remove is the need for an adult at home: six- and seven-year-olds cannot manage a learning day alone, online or otherwise.
Online Grade 1 at Teneo is taught entirely through 100% Live Classes — real-time, timetabled lessons with qualified teachers — following CAPS, South Africa's national curriculum, in English. In 2027 it costs R4,800 a month, plus a once-off R1,850 registration.
Grade 1 is the year children learn to read, write and work with numbers in a structured way. That makes it the grade where parents worry most about online school — and the one where how it's done matters most. Here's what online Grade 1 involves, what a parent's role is, and how to tell whether it's right for your child.
In the Foundation Phase, Teneo teaches live — no recordings-only or homeschooling options. For Grades R to 2, the only learning option is 100% Live Classes, in English.
100% live, timetabled, teacher-led lessons
The complete lesson recordings library — so a missed lesson can be watched later
Paired content modules for every subject lesson
Timetabled assessments set, invigilated, marked and moderated by qualified teachers
Direct messaging with teachers
24/7 access to MyTeneo for learners and parents
Subject-specific gap detection and personalised academic support
Termly promotion reports and subject-specific mastery reports
The recognition and reward programme
After-school, teacher-led, subject-specific group tutorials
Why live in Grade 1: young learners need a teacher's voice, encouragement and real-time correction to learn to read and count. Live lessons give them that.
Home Language — reading, writing, listening and speaking
First Additional Language
Mathematics — number sense, counting, early calculation, shapes and patterns
Life Skills — including beginning knowledge, creative arts and physical education
The focus is foundational: reading, writing and number work that everything later builds on. Gaps here are the hardest to close later, which is why Grade 1 is taught live, with teachers marking the work and reporting on progress every term.
An illustration — your child's actual timetable comes from Teneo on enrolment.
Morning: live Home Language lesson — phonics, reading and writing with the teacher and classmates
Break: snack, movement, time away from the screen
Mid-morning: live Mathematics — counting, number work and shapes
Break
Late morning: live Life Skills or First Additional Language
Afternoon: reading practice together, outdoor play, and an after-school group tutorial if a subject needs extra help
The live lessons give structure; the breaks matter just as much. A good Grade 1 day alternates focused learning with movement and play.
Teneo's teachers teach every lesson. The parent's role in Grade 1 is to:
Be nearby during the learning day, especially at the start of the year
Help with logging in, sound and the camera
Keep the routine — breakfast, a learning space, breaks
Support practice — reading together, counting games
Stay in touch with the teacher through messaging and reports
Plan for an adult to be available. Six- and seven-year-olds can't manage a full learning day alone, online or otherwise.
Can sit and focus for short periods with a teacher's guidance
Respond well to structure and routine
Need flexibility — for health, travel, family circumstances or location
Have struggled to settle, or had a difficult start, in a traditional classroom
No adult is available during the learning day
Your child needs a lot of physical, hands-on activity to engage, and you can't provide it at home
Daily in-person time with other children is a top priority
A fair concern. Grade 1 children shouldn't spend all day on a screen.
Short lessons with breaks — get up, move, have a snack between sessions
Offline practice — reading real books, writing on paper, counting with objects
Outdoor time every day, outside learning hours
Activities with other children — sport, music, play dates, extramurals
Online school is the delivery method, not the whole day. A good online Grade 1 day mixes live lessons with plenty of time away from the screen.
A quiet learning space with a table at the right height
A computer — a Windows or Apple computer from 2021 or newer; a laptop keeps lessons going through a power cut
A headset to cut out household noise
An internet connection of at least 20 Mbps
Backup power for the router — around four hours
Stationery and books — see the list after enrolment
100% Live Classes: R4,800 a month — R57,600 a year, in 12 instalments
Registration: R1,850 once-off, lower from term 2
Sibling discount: 5% for each child after the first
Not included: textbooks, stationery, a computer, internet and backup power.
Compared with private schools, where Foundation Phase fees, uniforms and transport commonly add up to much more, online Grade 1 is often the more affordable private option. See the 2027 fees.
Grade 2: 100% Live Classes continue.
Grade 3: families can choose 100% Live Classes or Mix of Live and Recorded Classes.
From Grade 4: all five learning options open up — including 100% Recorded Classes and two homeschooling options — in English or Afrikaans. See the learning options.
Moving in or out: Teneo accepts enrolments year-round. If your child later moves to a physical school, Teneo's termly promotion reports show their progress.
Teneo teaches CAPS from Grade R to Grade 12 and is registered with the IEB (11489) and SACAI (99304) for matric. In the Foundation Phase, learners follow the same national curriculum and progression requirements as any school. See Teneo's accreditation.
