A common question we get at Teneo from both parents and learners: can you do Matric online? The short answer is: Absolutely!
Every year, thousands of South African learners complete their Grade 12 (Matric) through online schools. They write the same final examinations, receive the same Umalusi-issued National Senior Certificate (NSC), and gain the exact same university acceptance opportunities as learners in traditional brick-and-mortar schools.
However, not all "online Matrics" are created equal.
If you are considering moving to an online environment for your final school year, or if you are looking to rewrite or upgrade your subjects, there are some things you should understand about accreditation, curriculum, and university acceptance first.
This guide explains exactly how online Matric works in South Africa and how to ensure you choose a path that protects your child’s future.
This is the most common question parents ask. There is often a misconception that an "online Matric" is a different, lesser qualification.
The reality is that there is no such thing as an "online Matric certificate." There is only the National Senior Certificate.
Whether you attend a traditional government school, a private physical school, or an accredited online school like Teneo, you are working towards the same certificate. At all types of accredited schools, you:
Study the same CAPS curriculum.
Complete the same School-Based Assessments (SBA).
Write the same final examinations at approved venues.
Get a certificate issued by Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training.
When a university admissions officer looks at your Matric certificate, it does not say "Online School." It simply confirms that you have met the requirements of the NSC.
Completing Grade 12 online offers flexibility, but it requires structure. Here is how the process works at Teneo school: 1. The curriculum: You will follow the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), which is the standard South African government curriculum. This ensures that if you are moving from a traditional school to an online school for Grade 12, the transition is seamless, and you continue with the same subjects you are used to.
2. Live classes vs. self-study: This is where providers differ. Some offer "distance learning," where you are sent textbooks and left to study alone. Teneo operates differently. We believe in structured, teacher-led learning. Our Grade 12 learners attend live, scheduled classes where they interact with qualified teachers and classmates in real-time. If you miss a class, recordings are available, but the focus is on engagement and active teaching – just like a physical classroom.
3. Assessments (SBA): Throughout the year, you will submit tasks, tests, and projects online. These form your School-Based Assessment (SBA) mark, which counts for 25% of your final grade (excluding Life Orientation, which is 100% internal).
4. The final examinations: You cannot write your final Matric examinations on a laptop in your bedroom. To ensure the integrity of the qualification, final examinations must be written in person at an accredited examination centre. Teneo is registered with SACAI and the IEB (parents can choose either examination board from Grade 10 onwards and Matric will be written through their selected exam board. Both are accredited by Umalusi and exams are written at designated examination centres across South Africa where our learners write their finals under strict invigilation conditions.
Moving to an online school for Grade 12 is a big decision. It works exceptionally well for:
Distraction-free learning: Learners who find the social drama or discipline issues of traditional schools distracting often see their marks improve in a focused online environment.
Athletes and performers: Learners who need flexibility to train or travel can attend classes from anywhere and catch up on recordings.
Anxiety sufferers: Learners who experience social anxiety often flourish when they can engage with academics from a safe, comfortable environment.
The "head-down" learners: Learners who are self-motivated and want to maximise their time by cutting out commuting and school assemblies.
If you search for "online Matric," you will find many providers. Be careful. If a school is not properly accredited, your child might spend a year studying only to find they cannot write the final examinations.
Always check for:
Registration with an assessment body: The school must be registered with SACAI or the IEB.
Umalusi accreditation: The assessment body must be accredited by Umalusi.
Teneo is fully accredited and registered with SACAI and the IEB – and our consistent, high pass rates and university exemptions speak for themselves!
Yes. South African universities (UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, UP, etc.) and international institutions look at your marks and your subjects, not the building you sat in while you learned them.
Because Teneo learners write the official SACAI examinations, their results are recognised universally. In fact, many of our alumni are currently studying Medicine, Engineering, Law, and Commerce at top universities.
Teneo has many alumni who have gone on to attend top universities in South Africa and Teneo's top IEB matriculant in 2024 went on to study a B.Comm: Chartered Accountancy through a PwC bursary this year.
Yes, but timing is critical. Because Grade 12 is a short year (examinations often start in October), it is best to make the switch at the start of the year (January). Switching mid-year in Grade 12 is administratively complex due to the transfer of SBA marks (your term marks) from your previous school to the assessment body. If you are considering a mid-year move, contact our admissions team immediately to see if it is still possible for the current academic year.
Your Matric year is the bridge to your future. You deserve a learning environment that supports you, respects your time, and gives you the best possible chance of success.
