Without Classes or Without Classes and Reports? Choosing Your Homeschooling Option

Teneo’s two homeschooling options share the same foundation: the content modules for every subject lesson, a schedule to work through them, CAPS, and access to MyTeneo. The difference is assessment. Without Classes adds timetabled assessments set, marked and moderated by qualified teachers, termly promotion reports and after-school group tutorials. Without Classes and Reports gives you the content and leaves assessment to you — and costs about 40% less in Grades 4 to 6. Which fits depends less on budget than on one question: will you mark every subject, every term, with confidence?

Teneo's two homeschooling options share the same content modules and schedule. Without Classes adds teacher-marked assessments, termly reports and teacher-led group tutorials. Without Classes and Reports is content only, for families who'll manage assessment themselves — and costs about 40% less in Grades 4 to 6.

Teneo's homeschooling options, new for 2027, are built for families who want to guide learning at home with a school's content behind them. The two options look similar on paper, but they ask very different things of parents. This guide sets out the difference, what each costs, and how to choose.

What both options include

The same foundation:

  • Teneo's content modules for every subject lesson

  • A schedule to work through them

  • CAPS, South Africa's national curriculum

  • English or Afrikaans in Grades 4 to 9 and on SACAI in Grades 10 to 12; English only on the IEB in Grades 10 to 12

  • 24/7 access to MyTeneo for learners and parents

  • Full curriculum or single subjects

  • From Grade 4

Neither includes teacher-led classes, a class timetable or direct teacher messaging, because the parent guides the day. Those come with Teneo's three online school options.

The difference, in one list

Without Classes adds:

  • Timetabled assessments set, invigilated, marked and moderated by qualified teachers

  • Termly promotion reports

  • After-school, teacher-led, subject-specific group tutorials

  • Optional add-ons: the lesson recordings library (per subject), gap detection and personalised academic support (all subjects), and mastery reports (all subjects)

Without Classes and Reports offers instead:

  • Prior-year content and assessments with memorandums in IEB Grades 4 to 9, on a schedule, for families to use and mark themselves

  • Current-year content with no assessments in Grades 10 to 12

  • One optional add-on: the lesson recordings library (per subject)

In short: Without Classes gives you a teacher's assessment of your child's progress. Without Classes and Reports gives you the content and leaves assessment to you. Everything else — the content, the schedule, the curriculum and the language options — is the same.

Choose Without Classes if…

  • You want an outside check on progress. A qualified teacher marks the work and reports every term

  • You're not confident assessing every subject yourself — especially Mathematics and the sciences as your child gets older

  • Your child benefits from occasional teacher contact, through after-school group tutorials

  • You want the option of academic support — gap detection and personalised support can be added

  • Your child is approaching high school, where assessment matters more and gaps are harder to close later

  • You'd like a record of progress — termly reports are useful if your child later moves to a school

Choose Without Classes and Reports if…

  • You're an experienced homeschooler comfortable setting and marking work

  • You want maximum flexibility over how and when assessment happens

  • Cost is the deciding factor — it's Teneo's lowest-cost option

  • You need single subjects to supplement another curriculum, or your child's school

  • You already have a tutor who can assess your child's work, and you need the content and schedule to work from

  • Your child attends another school and needs Teneo's content for extra structure in a subject

When neither is right: choose an online school option

Homeschooling depends on an adult guiding the day. If that isn't possible, or your child needs a teacher to explain new work, Teneo's online school options may suit better:

  • 100% Recorded Classes — from R2,600 a month in Grades 4 to 6: every lesson taught by a qualified teacher, on a schedule, with direct teacher messaging

  • Mix of Live and Recorded Classes — from R3,700 a month

  • 100% Live Classes — from R4,800 a month

The gap between Without Classes and 100% Recorded Classes in Grades 4 to 6 is R1,266.67 a month — and buys a teacher for every lesson, teacher messaging and built-in academic support. For a family where no adult can guide the day, that difference is usually worth it. See what each option includes.

Worked example: two children at home

A family homeschooling two children — Grade 5 and Grade 8:

Both on Without Classes

  • Grade 5: R1,333.33 a month

  • Grade 8: R1,750 a month

  • R3,083.33 a month — R37,000 a year, plus R1,500 registration

Both on Without Classes and Reports

  • Grade 5: R800 a month

  • Grade 8: R1,050 a month

  • R1,850 a month — R22,200 a year, plus R1,000 registration

Mixed: Grade 5 on Without Classes and Reports, Grade 8 on Without Classes

  • R2,550 a month — R30,600 a year, plus R1,250 registration

Why mixing can make sense: many parents are comfortable assessing primary-level work themselves, but want a teacher's marking as subjects get harder in high school.

The 5% sibling discount applies to Teneo's class options only, not the homeschooling options.

Can you switch options?

Yes. Learning options can be changed in the first term of the school year, by submitting a form before the monthly cut-off.

A common pattern:

  • Start on Without Classes to see how homeschooling suits your family

  • Move to Without Classes and Reports once you're confident assessing yourself — or

  • Move to an online school option if your child needs more teaching, often for Grades 10 to 12

Adding to either option

Without Classes can add:

  • The lesson recordings library, per subject — Teneo's recorded lessons, useful for subjects your child finds hardest

  • Gap detection and personalised academic support, for all subjects

  • Mastery reports, for all subjects

Without Classes and Reports can add the lesson recordings library, per subject.

One thing to know: adding recordings to Without Classes and Reports doesn't add assessments or reports. Add-ons are priced separately in the fees calculator.

Before you enrol: a checklist

  • Who will guide the learning day, and for how many hours?

  • Which subjects will you find hardest to assess yourself?

  • Do you need the full curriculum or only some subjects?

  • English or Afrikaans? Afrikaans is available in Grades 4 to 9, and on SACAI in Grades 10 to 12

  • Have you registered for home education with your Provincial Education Department, for Grades R to 9?

  • What's the plan for matric? Decide before Grade 10

A quick way to decide

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Will I mark every subject, every term, with confidence? If not — Without Classes.

  2. Is there an adult available to guide the learning day? If not — an online school option.

  3. Is my child heading into Grade 10 soon? If so, plan the matric route now — talk to admissions.

Still unsure? Talk to admissions — they can recommend a starting point for your child. Many families begin with Without Classes for the first term, then adjust once they've seen how homeschooling fits their week.
