2027 enrolments open

The IEB is not a curriculum. It’s an Umalusi-accredited exam board that assesses CAPS, South Africa’s national curriculum. So “IEB homeschooling” means homeschooling on CAPS with assessment aligned to the IEB’s approach — which rewards application and reasoning rather than recall. That distinction matters most at matric, where the IEB National Senior Certificate includes School-Based Assessment that has to be completed and moderated within the IEB system. It’s the part families most often discover too late.
The IEB isn't a curriculum — it's an Umalusi-accredited exam board that assesses South Africa's CAPS curriculum. "IEB homeschooling" means homeschooling on CAPS with IEB-aligned assessment. Teneo's homeschooling options include prior-year IEB assessments with memorandums in Grades 4 to 9, from R800 a month in 2027.
Many families searching for IEB homeschooling want the IEB's reputation for rigorous assessment, without a school timetable. It's a reasonable goal — but the IEB works differently from how most people assume, especially at matric. Here's what IEB homeschooling really involves, and how Teneo's homeschooling options fit.
No. The Independent Examinations Board is an exam board — an independent assessment body accredited by Umalusi.
The curriculum is CAPS — the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement, South Africa's national curriculum. The IEB's National Senior Certificate examinations are assessed on CAPS
The IEB sets and administers assessment — in particular the National Senior Certificate examinations in Grade 12
The IEB's style of assessment is known for testing understanding and application, not just recall
So "IEB homeschooling" really means: following CAPS at home, with assessment aligned to the IEB's approach.
Teneo is registered with the IEB (11489). Its IEB route runs in English or Afrikaans in Grades 4 to 9, and in English in Grades 10 to 12. Its two homeschooling options, new for 2027, start in Grade 4.
Teneo's content modules for every subject lesson, with a schedule
Prior-year content and assessments with memorandums in IEB Grades 4 to 9 — so learners practise IEB-style questions and parents can mark them
No classes, teacher messaging, marking or reports
Teneo's content modules for every subject lesson, with a schedule
Timetabled assessments set, invigilated, marked and moderated by qualified teachers
Termly promotion reports
After-school, teacher-led, subject-specific group tutorials
The difference that matters for IEB-minded families: Without Classes gives you a qualified teacher's judgement on your child's work every term. Without Classes and Reports gives you IEB-style practice material to mark yourself.
See what each learning option includes.
IEB assessment rewards thinking, not just remembering. Expect questions that ask learners to:
Apply what they've learned to unfamiliar situations
Explain their reasoning, not just give an answer
Interpret sources, data and texts
Write extended responses that build an argument
For homeschooling parents, this changes how you prepare. Memorising notes isn't enough. Learners need practice explaining, applying and writing — which is exactly what prior-year assessments help with.
On Without Classes and Reports in IEB Grades 4 to 9, the content and assessments are from the prior year, with memorandums, on a schedule. To get the most from them:
Use them as practice, not just tests. Work through one section at a time, then discuss the answers
Mark against the memorandum honestly, including how marks are allocated for reasoning
Look for patterns — the question types your child finds hardest show where to spend time
Repeat under timed conditions closer to the end of each term
If you'd rather a teacher did the marking, Without Classes includes assessments set, marked and moderated by qualified teachers, with termly reports.

The IEB National Senior Certificate includes School-Based Assessment — continuous assessment such as orals, practicals and portfolios, alongside the final examinations. That assessment has to be completed and moderated within the IEB system.
Without Classes and Reports has no assessments in Grades 10 to 12, so School-Based Assessment would need to come from elsewhere
Without Classes includes teacher-set and teacher-marked assessments — confirm with admissions how they relate to your child's matric registration
Final examinations are written in person at a registered examination centre
Exam board fees apply in Grade 12
The practical advice: decide your child's matric route before Grade 10. Many homeschooling families move to one of Teneo's online school options for Grades 10 to 12 — including 100% Live Classes, which Teneo offers on the IEB — so that assessment and registration are handled by the school.
Talk to admissions about the route for your child, ideally during Grade 9, so there's time to plan subjects and registration.
Rigour. IEB-style assessment emphasises understanding and application — good preparation for later study, where learners are expected to analyse and argue, not just recall.
A clear standard. Prior-year assessments and memorandums show exactly what's expected at each grade, so parents aren't guessing whether their child is on track.
A route to a respected matric. In 2025, the IEB reported a 98.31% pass rate across 17,413 candidates, with 89.12% achieving degree entry. Those figures reflect a cohort drawn largely from independent schools, but they show the standard IEB learners work towards.
Flexibility. Homeschooling neatly fits around travel, sport, health and family life — and families can set the pace of each day while still working towards a recognised standard.
In Grades 4 to 9, Teneo's homeschooling content is IEB-aligned, with prior-year IEB assessments on Without Classes and Reports.
In Grades 10 to 12, families choose an exam board:
IEB: R2,083.33 a month on Without Classes; R1,562.50 on Without Classes and Reports
SACAI: R1,666.67 a month on Without Classes; R1,250 on Without Classes and Reports
Both lead to the same National Senior Certificate, certified by Umalusi and accepted equally by South African universities, so the choice comes down to fees and fit. See Teneo's accreditation.
Under the BELA Act, home-educated learners in Grades R to 9 must be registered with their Provincial Education Department. Registration is free, and deemed successful if the department doesn't respond within 60 days of a complete application. Grades 10 to 12 are outside the requirement.
Choose the option — Without Classes for teacher-marked assessment, or Without Classes and Reports for content and IEB practice material
Choose full curriculum or single subjects
Register for home education with your Provincial Education Department, for Grades 4 to 9
Plan the matric route before Grade 10
Enrol — registration is R750 or R500, once-off

What is IEB homeschooling? Homeschooling on CAPS, South Africa's national curriculum, with assessment aligned to the IEB — the Independent Examinations Board. The IEB is an exam board, not a curriculum.
Is the IEB a curriculum? No. The IEB is an Umalusi-accredited exam board. Its National Senior Certificate examinations assess the CAPS curriculum.
Does Teneo offer IEB homeschooling? Teneo's homeschooling options include prior-year IEB assessments with memorandums in Grades 4 to 9 on Without Classes and Reports, and teacher-marked assessments on Without Classes. IEB homeschooling fees for Grades 10 to 12 are also published.

Can a homeschooled learner write the IEB matric? The IEB matric includes School-Based Assessment completed within the IEB system, plus examinations at a registered centre. Confirm the route with your provider before Grade 10.

Can I homeschool on the IEB in Afrikaans? In Grades 4 to 9, yes. Teneo's IEB route is English-only from Grade 10; Afrikaans-speaking learners continue on SACAI for Grades 10 to 12.
When should IEB homeschooling families plan for matric? Before Grade 10. School-Based Assessment counts towards the National Senior Certificate from Grade 10, so the route — homeschooling or one of Teneo's online school options — needs deciding at the end of Grade 9.
