Online Homeschooling in South Africa 2027: How It Works With Teneo

Online homeschooling sits between traditional homeschooling and online school. In traditional homeschooling, parents choose or build the curriculum, teach it and assess it themselves. In online school, the school’s teachers teach every lesson and mark the work. In online homeschooling, the school provides the content and the structure while the parent guides the day — and, depending on the option, the school’s teachers mark the work and report on progress. For many families it is the practical middle ground: the flexibility of homeschooling without having to design a curriculum from scratch or find age-appropriate material for every subject.

Online homeschooling gives parents a school's lesson content and a schedule to follow at home, with the parent guiding the learning. From 2027, Teneo offers two CAPS-based homeschooling options from Grade 4 — one with teacher-marked assessments and termly reports, one with content only — from R800 a month.

Homeschooling used to mean building your own curriculum from books and worksheets. Online homeschooling changes that: a structured course, organised lesson by lesson, that parents and children work through at home — with as much or as little school involvement as the family wants. Here's how it works, how Teneo's options differ, and what a homeschooling day actually looks like.

What is online homeschooling?

Online homeschooling sits between traditional homeschooling and online school.

  • In traditional homeschooling, parents choose or build the curriculum, teach it and assess it themselves

  • In online school, the school's teachers teach every lesson and mark the work

  • In online homeschooling, the school provides the content and the structure; the parent guides the day — and, depending on the option, the school's teachers mark the work and report on progress

For many families it's the practical middle ground: the flexibility of homeschooling, without having to design a curriculum from scratch, plan every lesson or find age-appropriate material for every subject.

Teneo's two online homeschooling options

Both are new for 2027, from Grade 4. Both follow CAPS, South Africa's national curriculum, using Teneo's content modules for every subject lesson, organised into a schedule — in English or Afrikaans in Grades 4 to 9, in English on the IEB in Grades 10 to 12, and in English or Afrikaans on SACAI in Grades 10 to 12. Both include 24/7 access to MyTeneo for learners and parents.

Without Classes

For families who want the school to assess and report, while the parent guides the day.

Includes:

  • Content modules for every subject lesson, with a schedule

  • Timetabled assessments set, invigilated, marked and moderated by qualified teachers

  • Termly promotion reports

  • After-school, teacher-led, subject-specific group tutorials

Doesn't include: teacher-led classes, a class timetable, the lesson recordings library, or direct teacher messaging.

Paid add-ons: the lesson recordings library (per subject), gap detection and personalised academic support (all subjects), and mastery reports (all subjects).

Without Classes and Reports

For families who want the content and the structure, and will manage teaching and assessment themselves.

Includes:

  • Content modules for every subject lesson, with a schedule

  • In IEB Grades 4 to 9, prior-year content and assessments with memorandums, on a schedule, for families to use and mark themselves

  • In Grades 10 to 12, current-year content with no assessments

Doesn't include: classes, teacher messaging, marking, reports or tutorials.

Paid add-on: the lesson recordings library (per subject).

Both are available as a full curriculum or as single subjects. See what each learning option includes.

What a homeschooling day looks like

A typical Grade 6 day on Without Classes:

  • 08:30 — Mathematics. Work through the day's scheduled content module together, then independent practice

  • 09:30 — English. Reading and the scheduled module

  • 10:30 — Break and movement

  • 11:00 — Natural Sciences and Technology, following the schedule

  • 12:00 — Lunch

  • 13:00 — Social Sciences or Afrikaans

  • 14:00 — Assessment preparation, ahead of Teneo's teacher-marked assessments

  • Afternoon, some days — a teacher-led group tutorial in a subject where your child needs help

The schedule does the planning. The parent's job is keeping the day moving, helping with new content and making sure work is done — not designing lessons from scratch.

For older learners, the day becomes more independent — the schedule sets the pace, and the parent checks progress rather than sitting alongside.

Your first month of online homeschooling

Week 1: set up. A quiet workspace, a computer and a reliable connection. Order textbooks and stationery. Read through the schedule for the term with your child.

Week 2: find the rhythm. Follow the schedule closely. Note which subjects take longer than planned and which your child moves through quickly.

Week 3: adjust. Move the harder subjects to the time of day your child concentrates best. Build in breaks and movement.

Week 4: check progress. On Without Classes, the first teacher-marked assessments give you an outside view. On Without Classes and Reports, use the prior-year assessments (in IEB Grades 4 to 9) to check understanding.

Expect the first month to feel uneven. Most families find their routine within a term. If the schedule still feels unmanageable after that, it's a sign to look again at the option — or at how much adult time the day really needs.

How much does the parent need to do?

More than in online school — and more on Without Classes and Reports than on Without Classes.

On Without Classes, you guide the day and help with content. Teneo's teachers set and mark the assessments, report each term and run group tutorials, so you're not the only judge of progress.

On Without Classes and Reports, you guide the day and manage assessment. Teneo provides the content and the schedule.

A realistic guide: in Grades 4 to 7, plan for an adult to be available for most of the learning day. From Grade 8, learners can work more independently, with a parent checking in.

Is online homeschooling legal in South Africa?

Yes. Home education is recognised in South African law.

Under the BELA Act, learners in Grades R to 9 who are home educated must be registered with their Provincial Education Department. Registration is free, organised by phase, and deemed successful if the department doesn't respond within 60 days of a complete application. Grades 10 to 12 are outside the requirement.

Apply early, keep proof of submission, and diarise the 60-day date. For a January start, apply in October or November.

Who online homeschooling suits

It suits families where:

  • A parent can guide learning during the day

  • The child is reasonably self-motivated

  • Flexibility matters — travel, sport, health or family circumstances

  • Cost matters, and parent time can replace teacher time

Online school may suit better if:

  • No adult is available during the day

  • Your child needs a teacher to explain new work

  • You want a teacher your child can message directly

Teneo offers both, so families can move between homeschooling and online school as their child's needs change. Learning options can be changed in the first term of the school year.

Why choose Teneo for online homeschooling?

  • The same content Teneo's online school uses, organised lesson by lesson

  • Teacher-marked assessments and termly reports on Without Classes — an outside check on progress

  • Group tutorials where your child can get help from a teacher

  • A clear route to matric through the IEB or SACAI, at a school registered with both

  • Room to grow — add recordings or academic support, or move to online school later
