Online school for working parents: how it actually works day-to-day

Every online school website tells you its model is flexible. Very few of them answer the actual question working parents have: if I am at the office and my child is at home, what happens? Who is watching? How do I know they are not just watching YouTube?

This is the question Teneo's model was built to answer.

The honest reality of online school for working parents

Online school does not require a parent to be a full-time teacher or a supervisor sitting at the kitchen table all day. Teneo is a real school with real teachers, live lessons, and a structured daily timetable. Your child is not doing self-study. They are attending school online.

What changes is the logistics. No uniform. No 45-minute commute each way. No being stuck at the office while your child is stranded waiting for a lift. The school day happens at home, and you have more visibility into it than you ever did when your child was in a physical building.

What a typical Teneo school day looks like

Teneo offers three formats: fully live, fully recorded, and blended. For working parent households, the blended or recorded format is often the most practical.

In a recorded format, lessons are pre-recorded by qualified, SACE-registered teachers and available on the platform at any time. Your child logs in, works through their timetable, completes activities, and submits work, all within the structure of a normal school day. The key difference from a correspondence course is that a real teacher is tracking every one of those activities in real time.

How the Smart School System™ replaces the need for constant parental supervision

The Smart School System™ is what makes Teneo's model work for working parents. Here is what it does in practice:

  • It tracks whether your child logged in, attended their lesson, completed their activities, and submitted their work, every single day.

  • If your child disengages or misses a session, the system flags it immediately, and an alert goes to both the teacher and the parent via the Parent App.

  • You do not find out at the end of the term that your child spent three weeks falling behind. You find out the same day it starts happening.

  • Teachers receive real-time insights into which learners need support and intervene early, before a gap becomes a problem.

The Parent App gives you a live view of your child's attendance, engagement, submissions, results, and progress at any time. You do not need to be physically present to know what is happening in your child's school day.

What about load shedding?

This is a real and practical concern for South African families. Teneo's recorded lesson model means that load shedding does not have to mean a lost school day. Lessons can be downloaded and accessed offline, and a learner can catch up on any missed session without losing content. For working parents who cannot supervise the school day in real time, the recorded model also removes the pressure of needing to be available during a specific live lesson window.

At what age can a child realistically do online school independently?

This varies by child. Most families find that learners in Grade 5 and above can manage the online school day with reasonable independence if the structure is clear and the tools are easy to use. Younger learners typically need more parental involvement, at least in the early weeks, to establish a routine. Teneo's academic team can advise on what to expect for your child's specific age and stage.

The gamification built into the Smart School System™ also helps. A ranked leaderboard, daily streaks for attendance and homework, and automated encouragement messages from the Teneo mascot are designed to motivate learners to stay on track without needing an adult to stand over them. The system shows a 95% correlation between leaderboard points and academic performance.

What happens if my child does not log in?

The system alerts both the teacher and the parent via the Parent App. The teacher follows up directly with the learner. You will know the same day.

Do I need to teach my child anything?

No. Teneo's teachers deliver all the instructions. Your role as a parent is to ensure your child has a suitable workspace, a reliable internet connection, and a device that meets Teneo's minimum specifications.

What if my child needs help with schoolwork and I am at work?

Learners can message their teachers through the platform during and after lessons. All lessons are also recorded, so your child can rewatch any explanation as many times as they need.
