How to Pick the Right Online School for Your Child: The Ultimate Buyer's Guide

Five years ago, parents had very few options for online schooling in South Africa. Today, a Google search for "online school" returns dozens of different private and public options.

Having options is great, but it makes the decision overwhelming. How do you distinguish between a legitimate school and a digital content library? How do you know there are supports, adequate resources and it will allow your child to achieve their goals?

This guide strips away the marketing fluff and gives you the objective criteria you need to evaluate any online school in South Africa.

Finding the best online school - South Africa: The 3 'Must-Haves' (The Non-Negotiables)

Before you look at flashy websites or cool videos, you must verify three legal and academic foundations. If a school fails any of these, it’s worth reconsidering your choice .

1. Accreditation and registration: A school cannot just "say" they offer Matric. They must be registered with an assessment body.

Ask for their SACAI or IEB registration number up front. Parents should look for online schools with a proven track record of helping learners achieve real outcomes—a strong track record is a key indicator of reliability. The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) is a recognised assessment body in South Africa that oversees and authenticates the administration of national qualifications like the NSC, ensuring quality assurance and university recognition.

Without proper accreditation, your child cannot write the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams. Accreditation is crucial for online schools, as it ensures that qualifications are recognised by universities and employers. Teneo, for example, is fully registered with SACAI (Centre Number 80004).

2. Curriculum alignment: Does the school follow CAPS, Cambridge, or an American GED?

Ensure you understand the implications. If you choose an American GED, know that South African universities treat it differently from an NSC. Sticking to the CAPS curriculum ensures the easiest pathway to local universities.

Many reputable online schools follow the CAPS curriculum or offer internationally recognised qualifications. This provides a broad selection of subjects to suit different learning needs, and ensures students receive a high quality education that opens doors to higher education both locally and abroad.

3. Physical exam venues. Online schools are digital, but final Grade 12 exams must be written in-person to be valid.

Ensure you ask the school: "Where will my child sit for Matric?" If they say "online at home," be very careful; that qualification may not be accredited and you might want to find a different school.

The "live" vs. "self-paced" difference

Many schools will offer both self-paced and live classes, and like, at Teneo, a mix of both. Understanding the difference between these options is crucial to picking the right online school for your child:

  • Asynchronous: You receive a login from the school and a list of tasks. Your child works through them on their own time without any live classes. This is cheaper but requires more discipline. This model is particularly suitable for frequent travellers who need flexibility to accommodate their unique or sporadic schedules.

  • Synchronous: Learners have a set timetable with a set log-in time and class time. They see a teacher and participate in classes, which happen on video conferencing software where they receive real-time, instructor-led sessions. Synchronous learning is an approach that allows learners to engage directly with teachers and peers. Structured lessons provide an organised framework for learning, making it easier for students and parents to follow progress. The quality of teaching and professional instruction in these live classes plays a crucial role in learner engagement and overall success.

  • The Verdict: Data shows that most children need human connection to learn most effectively. In fact, it's usually part of a healthy daily routine for online school students. But in self-paced, asynchronous classes, “ghosting” is common, whereas it’s much harder to hide in a live class. That's why balance is key, and finding a school that can offer at least a little bit of both. Note that this always varies depending on the unique needs of your child and their learning style.

Registered and qualified teachers

Online school students benefit from learning materials that are designed to make education engaging. From digital textbooks and interactive quizzes to video lessons and virtual labs, having differentiation and a wide-range of resources available are key components to a quality school. And the people who have a huge impact on these critical factors are the teachers.

The online school you choose should have positive reviews not only from parents and students, but also from the instructors working there. Teachers shouldn’t just be there to assign work and mark homework. A good teacher will constantly be focusing on building confidence, independence, giving quality lessons, learning materials and supplying engaging resources that support your child through their online learning.

Ensure that teachers at the school you enroll with are registered and accredited and have proper qualifications. Good online schools should provide academic support beyond just lesson delivery, including tutoring availability and assignment feedback, to ensure learners are fully supported.

All of this information should be readily available on their website. After all, these are the people guiding your child through the curriculum, offering feedback, support, and additional resources where needed!

At Teneo, for example, we are a team of +170 SACE-registered teachers and academics. Because a good teacher can make all the difference in a child's experience at school, and be critical in helping learners achieve academic success and reach their full potential.

Socialisation and student life

Don’t accept “it's an online school, there’s no social life” as an answer to your concern about your child’s social health at school. A good online school will build community by actively providing socialisation opportunities for learners.

  • Look for: A school with virtual clubs, e-sports leagues, and in-person regional meetups that help learners connect and build friendships.

  • Ask: “How will my child meet friends?”

At Teneo, we facilitate this through 30+ clubs and breakout rooms in class, as well as host wellness breaks with yoga stretches, dance workouts and more!

What is the parental involvement in online schooling?

Parental involvement (aside from the younger years in which they take on the role of a "learning coach") isn't required beyond simple support. With that said: Being engaged in your child's online schooling can make a huge difference in their success.

Quality online schools are structured to encourage active participation of parents and guardians, and understand how foundational they are to a child's success. At Teneo, for example, parents are even encouraged to come and join the fun on Family Fun Days and other in-person events throughout the year. We also keep communication between teachers and parents at the forefront of the academic experience.

Any online South African school should have a direct line of communication that makes reporting concerns or asking questions simple. They should provide parents with regular updates, and access to online portals for tracking progress or communication with teachers. This partnership ensures that parents are always informed and able to support their child’s learning journey.

Technical support and onboarding

Another important factor to consider is the tech support and onboarding process of the school you choose. After all, Online school is a tech product. So when technical difficulties occur – the Wi-Fi drops or the login fails – who's there to help?

Does the school have a dedicated technical support desk? Do they offer “Orientation Weeks” to teach your child how to use the software? Parents should look for schools that provide direct access to support staff and teachers, ensuring immediate help is available when needed. A responsive and accessible support system for students is essential!

"Hidden" costs to be aware of

In this economic climate, many families choose online schooling because it can be more affordable than traditional schooling when considering all associated costs such as uniforms, textbooks, and transport. But there are typically some additional costs – and these can vary greatly from school to school. Be sure to inquire about:

  • Tuition: What is the monthly fee?

  • Software: Do you need to buy any expensive software or technology?

  • Books: Are there e-books included in the tuition fees? Or are they separate?

  • Exam Fees: SACAI/IEB often charge a separate registration fee for Grade 12.

Costs for online schooling can vary significantly based on the platform, curriculum, and support services chosen by the family. Some online schooling providers offer flexible payment plans and packages to assist families with the costs of education.

Red flags to watch out for

  • No physical address or phone number: If you can’t call them, don’t enrol with them!

  • Guaranteed passes: No reputable school guarantees a pass.

  • Vague assessment bodies: If they can’t tell you exactly who issues certificates, it’s not credible.

  • Low or no success rates: Is there proof of student success rates and positive experiences?

With many schools having emerged in recent years, especially after lockdowns, not all meet the necessary quality standards. School parents and current parents should be vigilant, conducting thorough research before enrolling their child.

Parents should also investigate the school's reputation and track record, and evaluate the support structures available if their child struggles in an online school.

Making the Final Choice

Choosing the best online school in South Africa is about finding the right fit for your child's education, your family's circumstances, and your educational goals. Make the right decision by considering all aspects of your child's learning needs, the level of support required, and the level of flexibility you want.

The important thing is to assess what your child's unique needs are in a learning environment. A home education format can be extremely useful especially for learners who need a quiet, structured environment. It can make a big difference, especially for learners who need routine, support, or a gentle approach—including neurodiverse students.

The right tools and support can transform the online schooling experience, helping students thrive academically and emotionally.
