What Is an International GCSE?

An International GCSE is an internationally recognised secondary school qualification typically taken at ages 14–16, assessed by an external examination board such as Pearson Edexcel or Cambridge International. It is the international equivalent of the UK domestic GCSE, accepted by universities in over 160 countries as evidence of secondary education completion.

Students typically sit five to ten International GCSE subjects simultaneously, with examinations at the end of Year 11 (age 15–16). Results are graded 9–1 (Pearson Edexcel) or A*–G (Cambridge), and the qualifications are used by universities to set conditional offers and by employers as entry credentials.

How International GCSEs work

International GCSEs are subject-specific qualifications — a student takes separate IGCSEs in Mathematics, English Language, Biology, History, and so on. Each IGCSE is assessed through external examinations set and marked by the awarding organisation (Pearson Edexcel or Cambridge International), not by the school.

This external assessment is what makes IGCSEs universally trusted. The mark a student receives reflects performance against a national and international standard — not against their school's internal marking.

Examination series: Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs are available in January, May/June, and October/November. Most students sit examinations in the May/June series at the end of Year 11.

Grading: Pearson Edexcel International GCSE uses the 9–1 scale:

  • Grade 9: highest performance (above former A*)

  • Grade 8: equivalent to high A*

  • Grade 7: equivalent to A

  • Grade 4: the standard pass threshold

  • Grade 1: lowest awarded grade

What subjects are available at International GCSE?

Pearson Edexcel offers International GCSEs in over 30 subjects. The most commonly studied include:

Core: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics

Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Combined Science

Humanities: History, Geography

Business and Commerce: Business Studies, Economics, Accounting

Technology: Computer Science

Creative: Art and Design

Languages: French, Spanish, Arabic, and others

Students typically choose eight to ten subjects, ensuring they cover English, Mathematics, at least two Sciences, and a selection of additional subjects aligned with their intended university pathway.

Who can take International GCSEs?

Anyone — there are no nationality, residency, or school-type restrictions on sitting International GCSE examinations. Students at physical international schools, online schools, and home-educated students can all sit IGCSEs as private candidates at authorised examination centres.

The British Council operates examination centres in most countries, including the UAE, where students can sit Pearson Edexcel examinations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Frequently asked questions about International GCSEs

Is an International GCSE the same as a GCSE? They are equivalent qualifications at the same academic level, assessed by the same grading standards, and accepted by the same universities. The distinction is that IGCSEs are designed for international learners, with minimised coursework requirements and content appropriate for students studying outside the UK.

Do UK universities accept International GCSEs? Yes. All UK universities accept Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International GCSEs for admission. Most entry requirements specify grades using the 9–1 scale (or A*–C equivalent) and apply to both domestic GCSEs and IGCSEs.

How many IGCSEs should a student take? Most students take eight to ten. The minimum for most UK university entry requirements is five, including English Language and Mathematics at grade 4 or above. Competitive courses at Russell Group universities often require seven to nine strong grades.

Can International GCSEs be studied online? Yes. See the dedicated article on studying IGCSEs online.
