IEB or SACAI in 2027? Fees, Options and How to Choose

The IEB and SACAI both lead to the same National Senior Certificate, certified by Umalusi and accepted by every South African university on identical terms. A 75% average through SACAI carries the same standing as 75% through the IEB. What differs at Teneo in 2027 is cost and choice: SACAI tuition is lower at every grade — R28,800 less across Grades 10 to 12 on Mix of Live and Recorded Classes — while only the IEB offers 100% Live Classes. Exam board fees also start at different points, SACAI from Grade 10 and the IEB in Grade 12.

The IEB and SACAI both lead to the same National Senior Certificate, certified by Umalusi and accepted equally by South African universities. At Teneo in 2027, SACAI tuition is lower — R28,800 less over Grades 10 to 12 on Mix of Live and Recorded Classes — but only the IEB offers 100% Live Classes.

At the end of Grade 9, families at independent and online schools choose an exam board for matric. It's a bigger decision than it looks: it affects fees, learning options, exam fees and, for some families, language. But it doesn't affect the value of the certificate. Here's how the two compare in 2027.

IEB vs SACAI: what's the same

Both are Umalusi-accredited independent assessment bodies for the National Senior Certificate.

Both lead to the same qualification:

  • The National Senior Certificate, issued by Umalusi

  • Based on CAPS, the national curriculum

  • Accepted by every South African university on the same terms — a 75% average through SACAI carries the same standing as 75% through the IEB

  • Final examinations written in person at a registered centre

Teneo is registered with both — IEB 11489 and SACAI 99304. See Teneo's accreditation.

Exam board fees: when they start

  • IEB: exam board fees apply in Grade 12. In 2026, the IEB Grade 12 examination fee was R16,000 for seven subjects, venue included

  • SACAI: exam board fees apply from Grade 10 — a smaller fee in Grades 10 and 11, then the Grade 12 examination fee

At Teneo, Grade 12 exam board fees must be paid by 31 March of the matric year, or the learner can't be registered for that year's examinations.

The learning options differ

The biggest practical difference at Teneo: SACAI has no 100% Live Classes option in Grades 10 to 12.

  • Want a full live timetable through matric? That's the IEB.

  • Comfortable with Mix of Live and Recorded Classes, recorded lessons or homeschooling? Both boards offer these.

Check language too. Use the fees calculator's language option to confirm what's available in English and Afrikaans for your child's grade and board.

Is IEB harder than SACAI?

It's the wrong question to answer with pass rates alone.

The 2025 figures:

  • IEB: 98.31% pass rate, with 89.12% achieving degree entry

  • SACAI: 73.16% pass rate

Why the gap isn't simply difficulty: the IEB's candidates come mostly from independent schools, many of which select their intake. SACAI's candidates come mainly from distance-education providers and online schools, with a far wider mix of learners and circumstances. Different cohorts produce different results.

At Teneo, the SACAI stream passed at 82.2% in 2025 — about nine percentage points above the SACAI average.

The honest answer: the boards assess the same curriculum for the same certificate. Choose on fit, fees and options, not on a belief that one is "easier."

Subjects and electives

At Teneo, learners in Grades 10 to 12 choose their electives from up to 14 subjects. The subjects available can differ between boards and languages, so check your child's subject combination for each board before deciding — particularly if they need Mathematics and Physical Sciences for engineering, medicine or a BSc.

What the choice means for university

Nothing, in terms of recognition. Universities assess the NSC results, not the board.

What matters for university is the same on both boards:

  • A bachelor pass

  • The right subjects at the right levels — Mathematics rather than Mathematical Literacy for most science, commerce and engineering degrees

  • Strong final Grade 11 marks, which universities use for first-round offers

  • The NBT, where a university requires it

A learner's marks, not the board, decide their options.

Which should you choose?

Choose the IEB if:

  • You want 100% Live Classes through matric

  • Your child is already in the IEB system and thriving

  • The higher fee fits your budget

Choose SACAI if:

  • Cost matters — tuition is lower in every option it offers

  • Your child learns well with recorded lessons or a mix

  • You want flat fees across Grades 10 to 12

Either way: the university value of the certificate is the same.

A practical way to decide: run both boards through the fees calculator for your child's preferred learning option, check that their subject combination is available on each, and then choose the one that fits how your child learns best. Price matters, but a learner who thrives in their learning option will usually achieve more than one who saved money on an option that doesn't suit them.

Moving to Teneo for Grade 10

Many families switch to online school at the start of Grade 10, when the exam board choice is made anyway.

  • Enrol for 2027 now — Teneo accepts enrolments all year, and 2027 enrolments are opening

  • Choose the board and learning option together — the calculator shows both

  • Registration is R1,850 on the class options, or R750 and R500 on the homeschooling options

When to choose — and when to switch

The cleanest point is the start of Grade 10, when FET subjects and School-Based Assessment begin.

Switching boards mid-FET is harder, because assessment completed under one board has to be carried over to the other. Decide in Grade 9 if you can, and talk to admissions before any mid-FET change.

For the matric year itself, see online Grade 12 and Teneo's results.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the IEB and SACAI? They're two Umalusi-accredited exam boards for the same National Senior Certificate. At Teneo, they differ in fees, learning options and when exam board fees start.

Is IEB harder than SACAI? Both assess the same CAPS curriculum for the same certificate. Pass-rate differences largely reflect different cohorts — the IEB mostly serves independent schools, SACAI mostly distance and online learners.

Do universities prefer the IEB? No. South African universities treat an NSC through the IEB or SACAI the same way.

Is SACAI cheaper than the IEB at Teneo? Yes. Over Grades 10 to 12 at 2027 rates, SACAI costs R28,800 less on Mix of Live and Recorded Classes and R43,200 less on 100% Recorded Classes.

Does SACAI offer live classes at Teneo? SACAI is offered with Mix of Live and Recorded Classes, 100% Recorded Classes and the homeschooling options in Grades 10 to 12 — not 100% Live Classes.

When are exam board fees charged? On the IEB in Grade 12; on SACAI from Grade 10. Grade 12 exam board fees are due to Teneo by 31 March.

Can I switch from the IEB to SACAI? It's simplest at the start of Grade 10. Switching mid-FET means carrying assessment across boards, so talk to admissions first.

How many subjects can learners choose from in Grades 10 to 12? At Teneo, electives come from up to 14 subjects. Check that your child's combination is available on the board you choose.

Which board is better value? On tuition, SACAI. On options, the IEB, which adds 100% Live Classes. Both lead to the same National Senior Certificate.
