From chronic illness to creative expression: How Teneo School supports learners like Tianita

March is Autoimmune Awareness Month, a reminder that not every challenge a learner faces is visible, and that the right learning environment can make all the difference.

For Grade 12 learner Tianita Eksteen, learning has never followed a predictable path. Living with chronic pain and autoimmune-related conditions, her days can shift quickly. Energy, focus and physical comfort are not always guaranteed. But her learning has not stopped. It has adapted.

With Teneo School’s flexibility, Tianita is able to continue her academics while also pursuing something deeply personal to her — her art.

“Art has always been my therapy.”

During long hospital stays and difficult periods, art became a way to process what she was experiencing. A constant. A way to stay mentally strong and keep moving forward.

Through access to live and recorded lessons, she can learn at her own pace, revisit content when needed, and stay on track even when her circumstances change. It means she does not have to choose between her health, her education, and what she loves.

This is what a smarter system makes possible.

When learning adapts to the learner, progress becomes more consistent. Gaps are reduced earlier. And learners are able to keep building toward their future, not in spite of their challenges, but alongside them.

Tianita’s journey is a reminder that potential doesn’t disappear when circumstances are difficult. With the right structure and support, it continues to grow.
