FET SUBJECT CHOICES FOR 2020

Prior to making your subject choices for Grade 10, please consider the following information:

Mathematics Core or Mathematics Literacy

It is very important to make sure which of the two you will need for your tertiary studies. Most degrees and university studies require Mathematics Core. This doesn’t mean that you can’t study at university if you choose Mathematics Literacy, but it does limit your choices.

Be well-informed about application prerequisites for your desired field of study. Tertiary Institutions have very clear requirements for their courses and it is important that subject choices are informed by these requirements.

Physical Sciences and Information Technology require that you are also studying Mathematics Core.

Changing to Mathematics Literacy at a later stage could require other subject changes to conform to this requirement. (e.g. If you had Physics as a subject you would have to change it too if you change to Mathematics Literacy.)

Whilst Mathematics Core is not a prerequisite for Accounting, it is highly advisable. A pass mark in Mathematics Literacy is a far better result than a failing mark in Mathematics Core.
Mathematics Literacy does not necessarily mean the end of all study or career paths.

** PLEASE NOTE **

NO subject changes will be allowed after the start of the Grade 11 Academic year.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR SOME CHOICE SUBJECTS EXIST

Mathematics Core

A minimum pass of 50% at the end of Grade 9 is required to study Mathematics Core.
